Visit of the Presidency of the Conference of Bishops of France (CEF) in Rome, June 2025

On June 19 and 20, 2025, just before concluding their term, the Presidency of the CEF visited the Vatican as part of their annual visit. During these two days, Archbishop Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, Archbishop of Reims and President of the CEF, Archbishop Vincent Jordy, Archbishop of Tours and Vice-President of the CEF, Bishop Dominique Blanchet, Bishop of Créteil and Vice-President of the CEF, Bishop Hugues de Woillemont, Secretary General and spokesperson for the CEF, accompanied by Mrs. Céline Reynaud-Fourton, Director of Institutional and International Affairs, reported to Pope Leon XIV and the prefects of various Roman dicasteries on the work and issues engaging the Church in France.\n\nThis visit began with a meeting with the French ambassador to the Holy See, Mrs. Florence Mangin, and her colleagues. On Friday, June 20, the Presidency was received in an audience by the Holy Father. During this meeting, a review of the past six years was presented along with the end-of-term report. The following topics were discussed: catechumens, solidarity, priest formation, traditionalists, the path of transformation of the CEF, ecology, mission, synodality, the institutional relations of the Church in France.\n\nPope Leon XIV specifically focused on ecological issues in light of Laudato si', the rise in the number of catechumens in France, and the very tense international situation in various parts of the globe.\n\nThese days in Rome also provided the Presidency an opportunity to meet the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, with whom they discussed the state of interreligious dialogue in France today, and finally the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life, with whom they discussed bioethical issues, particularly the right to assisted dying, currently being debated in France.
